The original edition of The TWI Report was printed in 1945 from information gathered during the last months of the TWI Service’s existence. It has been the best source of background information available about the development of TWI and their training programs. It is estimated that less than 100 copies of the original edition still exist today. 398 pages of in-depth information about the development of all the TWI programs, plus information on the introduction of TWI into Japan.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. Development of the ‘J’ programs is an adventure story in the manufacturing realm. Each program has its own story amidst the tensions of enthusiasm and resistance. Success prevailed as yet another triumph of the ‘greatest generation’ during the 1940’s decade. Availability of this book amongst operations management practitioners will reap organizational benefits for current and future generations.

The TWI Final Report is valuable because it is a reflection of the TWI Programs themselves. Outwardly they appear simple; but when studied, the reader finds a treasure of universal managerial principles. In order to get the most value out of this Report, one should "read between the lines" to determine the fundamental, timeless concepts the Service intended to convey.

The TWI report gives a good historical perspective on some of the foundations of the Toyota Production System. Mark provides numerous footnotes and additional background to help bring forward some of the missing pieces. His research is invaluable for people who want to know more about the origins of these processes and how to apply them successfully.
